This is so funny to me. I am shocked that Europeans don't like Hershey's Chocolate. I think it has the best chocolate flavor. I like the bars better than the Kisses. I think it has a salty sweet bitter flavor. It melts the best and makes great S'mores.

I'm from New Zealand so see myself as neutral in the US vs. UK debate. I just tried hersheys and was really surprised by the aftertaste... there is definitely a hint of vomit there... but it is the same hint of vomit that you get in strong cheese. So if you like strong cheese you might like hersheys... though I can't say I recommend them.

I'm American. I'll never forget the first time I took a Hershey Bar over to Wales for my boyfriend to try... it was HILARIOUS!~~ He put it in his mouth and then ran over to spit it out in the trash and told me it tasted like dog's vomit! I cracked up! I thought he was joking! Then I researched how they make the chocolate and how they use butyric acid to make it. Well, Butyric acid is one of the ingredients in Vomit, Sour Milk, etc.... so of course it's similar in scent/taste. However, to us American's we never associated the Butyric acid in the chocolate bar with the butyric acid in vomit, but I guess to someone who's never had a candy bar with butyric acid in it would! Butyric acid is used (I believe) as a preservative. Too bad it's distinct scent and flavor repulses those of you who are not used to it being in chocolates! Hershey isn't the only company by the way that uses it, just the first and I believe they create it in a very natural way (letting the milk go funky) but in a sterile process. Anyhow, this is hilarious to me. My favorite Chocolate however is still the American version of Cadbury. The UK version tastes different to me.

I absolutely love chocolate, any sort will do i'm not fussy or snobby. However, on the few occasions people have brought Hershey's into work I have been convinced that the chocolate had gone off or past its sell by date, why does it have that oh so pungent cheese taste. aarrrgh. It's only the milk chocolate, the dark chocolate is very nice. I'm glad I found these reviews as i'm the only one in work that seems to be able to detect the vomit taste. Some of us like the taste of home, despite the snobby European views of inferiority. I am a Canadian currently working in South Korea, and I have always liked Hershey's Chocolate. I find European chocolates too sweet, and with the stuff here they are so obsessed with the amount of cocoa that the stuff is too bitter. Hershey's is sold all over Korea, and I like going to Costco to get a big bag of the kisses. Typical European attitudes, everything is sooooo better in Europe. Well its not. If it was, wouldn't we all want to live there??? Well stick to your stuff, and stop complaining about ours. You guys make a lot garbage that shouldn't be sold, but somehow finds its way around the world to some people that like it.

I find all of these review very interesting. I never noticed anytype of vomit smell. I grew up on Hershey being American. And it is interesting how those from a different culture can see things because of the way people are brought up to experience food. I guess next time that I eat a hershey bar I will check that smell out.
I love Hershey bars! I get them shipped to me here in Brazil from my sister sometimes. They have them here in Brazil but they taste like crap! They change the formula here to suit to the taste of the Brazilian. So I hate Brazilian Hershey chocolate. Stupid marketing! I want to write Hershey to complain for not sticking to principle.
I love the original though. I will eat them forever

There is absolutely nothing in the world that tastes worse than Hersheys. I couldn't believe how foul it was, so when I went to America I bought a bar and gave it to my friend to eat, pretending it was the best thing ever. She nibbled a tiny bit off one corner, tasted it for about ten seconds, and then went and threw up. I felt sick just with the smell of it.
I took a whole load of miniatures back to test on my colleagues, and two weeks later only a few are gone... nobody will eat them. These people eat anything! Do not go near this chocolate. You will regret it.

My American housemate introduced my to Hershey bars at University (the poor girl was very upset when she realised we Brits didn't sell them in our shops.) First time I tried a bar I didn't understand the big deal, and many of my fellow British housemates refused to ever eat another bar. Strangely though the unique tasting chocolate grew on me, and by my second or third bar I fell in love with it. Hersheys tastes so good that I now find it difficult to eat Cadburys or Galaxy chocolate anymore which is sickly sweet in comparison. It does smell a little funky though, and I wish the bars were a little bigger since they're very thin.

Since I live in the states I, like millions of other americans, grew up eating Hershey chocolate. Last week however, my daughter gave me a piece of her bar and it tasted like cheap, awful chocolate. I thought maybe it was a bad bar or something so I bought one myself. Nope, they definitely changed their formula. It now tastes like the cheap chocolate you might find in the dollar store with some strange name to it. Almost a weird cheap vanilla taste like they substituted real vanilla with some artificial flavoring. Definitely a mistake on their part. I myself have been buying more expensive, organic chocolates because I would rather pay more money and indulge once in a while for the real thing. It's a shame that Hershey has done this and it's only a matter of time before people catch on but then again we are so used to processed foods in this country that maybe they will get away with it.

Who the heck came up with the recipe and do they really use cocoa beans? Cadburys, I do not like but Galaxy is good. I love 70% solids dark chocolate or a good quality milk chocolate. In order to ever eat Hersheys again, I would need to have my sense of taste removed, be tied up and force fed it. Awful, awful stuff.

As a lifetime lover of chocolate and living in the US, I guess I had just gotten used to Hershey's and thought it was great. That was until I visited Munich Germany and bought some milk chocolate made locally at a chocolate shop there. It was by far the best chocolate I had ever eaten. Hershey's is not even in the same league. Then I watched a TV documentary on chocolate with a good segment about Hershey. Their recipe calls for the milk to go sour before the bars are made. That's exactly why it tastes spoiled. Since I had that German chocolate, I don't even eat a free Hershey bar.

But on opening the second bar, it smelled complete different to the first, and tasted sour...this may be because of temperature, i refrigerated the second bar which may have effected it, but shouldn't have cos cadbury is lovely from the fridge! The same happened with those milk chocolate kisses! I bit one and the taste was vile...i had to spit it out (sorry fans)! These were refirgerated also...but i can say, the caramel filled kisses were amazing! I finished the whole packet! Hershey always used to use up the milk that had gone sour to make their chocolate, it was cheaper and supported local farmers. The taste has never changed, which is why some people detect that 'high' taste or smell in the product. Obviously it would be a marketing disaster for them to change the taste today, but it explains why someone who is new to the taste and smell of Hersheys picks up on the essence of putridity

It is mass produced as cheaply as possible with huge marketing campaigns to a mostly captive/ignorant audience. It might have been good years ago, but by now they've found a sweet spot of lousiness that maximizes profits and most people don't know any better after watching Hersheys commercials for decades. To any other Americans on here, try non-Hersheys sometime Lindt truffles are good and cheap.

Coming from the states, I was quite disappointed when I realized there were no Hershey bars in London (by the way, they are made in Hershey, PA). I've grown up eating them on s'mores and all melty on warm days and love them to death. The taste is smooth and rich and if you break the bar into the mini bars it can last forever! I've tried some Cadbury's chocolate now while I'm here in London and the taste to me is a bit off. But to each their own!

You really cant get away from the smell of it, I really have no idea where it comes from (and I know it sounds nasty) but it really does smell of vomit.
If you ignore the smell it is a bit chalky/waxy in the texture department but if your really desperate its not bad.
It gets 2 stars because its dieters chocolate - the taste/smell seems to get worse the more of it you eat. If I want less sugar I would rather eat cadburys bournville.
Hersheys does not give american chocolate a good name, I just wish more people would discover Ghiradelli - its creamy, tastes caramelly, and melts like a velvet kiss over your tongue. I discovered Ghiradelli in San Francisco and it beats all european chocolate hands down. Hersheys could learn a few lessons from them, especially on how to improve the smell!

At birthdays, people in my class gave out Hershey's milk chocolate and Hersheys kisses. And we all loved it. People who actively don't like Hershey's chocolate are probably actively looking for sites to complain on. I haven't met anybody who didn't like it.

Hershey's chocolate is a great product. If it wasn't, it wouldnt still be around after 112 years. Now some of you Brits might not like it (or most of you) but thats okay because it's not made for you. Its made for Americans. And we won both world wars because of it...and the Revolution...and the war of 1812. So by all means buy your Cadbury and stop slandering our sweet sweet Hershey's Chocolate...and you're welcome for beating germany.

This is an odd one. The first thing that hits you when you open a bar of Hershey's is the smell: like rancid essence of bile. It's really pronounced, and is evidently enough to put most people off Hershey's for life. It nearly did me. But oddly, once (or if) you get past the smell then the chocolate itself is none too bad. It's quite creamy, rich tasting, with a nice melt-in-the-mouth quality. Some have commented on its graininess. I admit, it never really struck me as that big of a deal, though if you like your chocolate super smooth you might want to take that into account.
Anyway, I must be a glutton for punishment because I bought another bar. Sure enough, same stench, same surprisingly pleasant taste. Maybe it's the brand name calling to me (and it does have such a nice wrapper) but I now buy a bar every time I'm in the States. And a funny thing has happened. I no longer notice the smell, and I find myself craving the chocolate more and more when I'm away. Whatever addictive chemicals they inject into the formula must be doing their job...
All 'joking' aside, if I were rating this on taste alone it would be a firm four. But honestly, the smell is going to be too much for many to ignore, so I have to knock a star off. Sure, it's not up there with the very best Belgian and Swiss brands, but as a commercial candy bar it certainly holds its own. Just try not to vomit first time round.

I tried Hersheys when I was on holiday in New York and thought that it was absolutely disgusting. But 'hey ho' I thought, it's world-famous so maybe it's just me, so I brought some back for the office as is the tradition when you've been on holiday. To say I was unpopular is an understatement. It's difficult to say what they hated more - those or the fish-flavoured sweets I brought back from Denmark...

Completely agree with the comments about different tastes but then how do the americans manage to make such an excellent product as Ghirardelli chocolate? All mass produced chocolate in the UK is now getting too sweet so go for a good quality like Green and Blacks, more expensive but worth the outlay.

In watching a documentary on chocolate it said the reason european chocolate tastes different from US is because we get our cocoa from different continents, which are different types of cocao plants. I'm sure some companies also add their own little unique differences that we grew up on, but foreigners aren't accustomed to. So I think that proves that it is aquired tastes, depending on where you live. I often hear people say that when they visited UK or europe the chocolate tastes like cheap Easter or Christmas candy. but I've heard that europeans say they can't find good tasting chocolate over here. Even the Cadbury's and Dairy Milk made in the US is made more to suit our taste, so visiting europeans wonder what we've done to it. And we wonder why, besides the candy bars, oreos taste bad in the UK. The chocolates I find in our import stores tastes nasty to me so visitors could get their european candy there and be satisfied. My son-in-law recently attends Edinburgh University and I have been sending my daughter items that she says doesn't taste the same over there, like chocolate, peanut butter, oreos, pickles..but they are getting used to some of the differences, and will have to get used to it again when they come back here to live.

After I came to the US I tried Hersheys milk chocolate; the sour milk aftertaste is nasty. I agreed with other reviewers, British chocolate is better than USA. Then I tried Ghirardelli. A really excellent chocolate, by any standards. So all ex pats, if you do not like Hersheys strange taste, buy Ghirardelli

I am so glad to find this collection of reviews because while I really enjoy Hershey's milk chocolate and sometimes actually prefer it (especially the version with almonds) to the other common ones around here such as Lindt, Cadbury, Toblerone, Milka, Chunky, Nestle, Ghirardelli, Dove etc., it DOES have a definite bile taste that is especially noticeable as an after-effect in the back of the mouth and throat. I was always kind of amazed at this being part of the experience whenever somebody offered me a Hershey's Kiss at work etc., but I never checked to see if anyone else noticed the same thing, perhaps because I thought it was just my subjective take and that it was weird to still like Hershey's if it tasted that way to me! (I think a kind of warning aura of this effect is often noticed as soon as you pop it in your mouth -- seems like especially if it's a Kiss, though I don't see why that would be -- maybe that comes from the smell that others are talking about.)

My boss bought me back some Hershey's Chocolates from New York. (I don't think she likes me) The Peanut choc was great, the dark chocolate was great, the milk chocolate was (and tasted like)VOMIT. I thought that someone in the factory had barfed in the chocolate till I found this website. BELIEVING IS SMELLING AND TASTING!

Hersheys chocolate sucks. England has the nicest choclate by far...Galaxy and Cadburys...yum yum. I bought bars of Cadburys and Galaxy chocolate whilst I was in America and they tasted foul...definately not made in any English factory. I was cheated out of my money.
